Dental Care During Your Stay in Japan

English-speaking prosthodontist · Same-day ceramic and zirconia crowns · Treatment planned before you travel

Sakura-st Minami Dental Clinic building in Urayasu, Chiba

Sakura-st Minami Dental Clinic is a private dental clinic in Urayasu, Chiba, a short bus ride from Maihama Station (Tokyo Disney Resort) and Shin-Urayasu Station. Our director, Dr Ichiro Minami, treats visiting patients in English.

We review your X-rays before you travel, agree a written treatment plan and estimate with you, and schedule your treatment in as few visits as possible. Many crowns can be completed in a single appointment, because we design and make them in our own clinic.

All treatment for visitors is private (self-pay). Japanese public health insurance does not apply.

Treatments for Visitors

Designing a same-day ceramic crown on screen
In-clinic milling unit that makes same-day crowns

We focus on treatments that can be completed safely within a short stay: crowns, inlays, root canal treatment, simple extractions, and check-ups with cleaning. Treatments that need healing time between stages, such as dental implants, are not offered to visitors.

  • Full-contour zirconia crowns are also available for JPY 22,000 (AUD 200) more per crown.
  • Whether a root canal can be finished in one visit depends on the tooth. We tell you after reviewing your X-rays, and confirm it on the day with a CT scan.
  • Your final plan and fee are confirmed after the examination. We explain any change and ask for your agreement before going ahead.

Dental Emergency During Your Stay

If you develop dental pain while in Japan, we provide a panoramic X-ray, emergency treatment and medication for JPY 11,000 (AUD 100). Please call us on +81-47-711-1805 during opening hours; we will see you as soon as our schedule allows. Any further treatment is explained and agreed with you before it starts, at the fees below.

How It Works

  1. Send us your details. Email us your travel dates, the treatment you need, and recent X-rays from your dentist at home (a panoramic X-ray is ideal). Please include the tooth numbers if you know them, and your medical conditions and medications.
  2. Pre-trip assessment. Dr Minami reviews your X-rays and sends you a written treatment plan, schedule and estimate. There is no separate charge for this assessment; it is included in the first visit fee.
  3. Book and pay the deposit. We reserve your appointments with a deposit of JPY 11,000 (AUD 100) per 45-minute appointment slot. The deposit is credited against your treatment fees.
  4. Treatment in Japan. We confirm the plan with an examination and, where needed, a CT scan. Crowns are designed, made and fitted in our clinic, usually on the same day.
  5. Take your records home. You receive an English treatment summary for your dentist at home, an itemised receipt in English, and your X-ray and CT image data, sent to you by email.

Fees

All fees are private (self-pay), include Japanese consumption tax, and are charged in Japanese yen. AUD amounts are for reference, at our current clinic rate of 1 AUD = 110 JPY.

Feldspathic ceramic bonds most strongly to the tooth and is our usual recommendation. Zirconia is the strongest material and is chosen when repairs would be difficult, for example for patients who live far away.

The fee for a tooth is confirmed after the examination. If a different treatment is needed, we explain it and ask for your agreement before going ahead.

Risks and Limitations

Like all dental treatment, the treatments on this page carry risks. We explain them in detail before you agree to treatment.

  • Root canal treatment: pain or swelling after treatment (under 10%); a fine instrument tip breaking inside the canal (about 5%); air entering the tissue and causing facial swelling (under 1%). Some teeth need more than one appointment, and a tooth that has been treated before may have blocked canals or a hole in the root.
  • Crowns: a crown can fracture, and a tooth without a living nerve can crack at the root. A cracked root usually cannot be saved. Teeth with a living nerve may be sensitive to cold for a while. We may reshape neighbouring or opposing teeth slightly to achieve a natural shape and enough crown thickness.
  • Extraction: swelling, pain, bleeding and dry socket can occur. Swelling usually peaks 2–3 days after the extraction. Fully impacted wisdom teeth are not extracted at our clinic; we refer you to an oral surgeon.
  • If a tooth cannot be saved: if we find a cracked root or a similar problem during treatment, we may stop and recommend extraction. You pay only for treatment carried out.
  • Limited follow-up: as you will return home soon after treatment, please arrange regular check-ups with your own dentist. We provide the records they need.

Booking, Deposit and Payment

Your appointments are reserved once we receive your deposit of JPY 11,000 (AUD 100) per 45-minute appointment slot. The deposit is credited against your treatment fees on the day.

When you cancel or changeDeposit
22 days or more before your appointmentRefunded in full
8–21 days before50% refunded
7 days or less before, or if you do not attendNot refunded

If we cannot provide your treatment for reasons on our side (for example, an equipment failure), we refund your deposit in full or rearrange your appointment, as you prefer.

Payment: you can pay the deposit and your treatment fees in either of two ways. We do not add a surcharge.

  • Bank transfer in AUD to our account at ANZ (Australia). The AUD amount is calculated at our current clinic rate, and we send you the account details with your booking confirmation. Deposits paid in AUD are refunded in AUD.
  • Credit card (Visa, Mastercard, JCB, American Express, Diners Club), charged in Japanese yen. Your card issuer converts the amount at its own rate.

Busy periods: the Christmas–New Year period and Australian school holidays fill early. Please contact us as soon as you know your travel dates.

After You Return Home

Dental treatment lasts longest with regular check-ups. Please see your own dentist for check-ups and cleaning; we recommend every 3 months.

  • Records: you take home an English treatment summary, and we email you your X-ray and CT image data, so your dentist can continue your care.
  • Crown redo policy: if a crown we made fractures within 5 years, we remake it at our clinic in Japan for JPY 33,000 (AUD 300).
  • Not covered: a fractured root (the only treatment is extraction), damage from injury or very heavy grinding without a night guard, and further root canal treatment.
  • Questions after treatment: you can email us at any time. If you have pain or swelling, please also contact your dentist at home or your travel insurer.

FAQ

Can I use my Australian private health insurance?

We cannot claim directly from overseas insurers. We give you an itemised receipt in English; please ask your insurer in advance whether treatment overseas is covered.

How long does a same-day crown take?

About 3–4 hours for one tooth, including the time while your crown is made in our clinic. You can rest in the waiting room during that time.

Can you treat two or more teeth in one day?

Often yes. We plan this with you after reviewing your X-rays.

What if a treatment cannot be finished during my stay?

We seal the tooth securely and give you an English summary for your dentist at home. You pay only for treatment carried out.

What if I have toothache while I am in Japan?

Call us during opening hours. An emergency visit, including a panoramic X-ray, emergency treatment and medication, costs JPY 11,000 (AUD 100).

Which days can I be seen?

Full-day treatment is available on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The clinic is closed on Thursdays, Sundays, public holidays and the New Year period.

Do I need a visa?

Visitors from many countries, including Australia, can enter Japan for short stays without a visa. Please check the requirements for your nationality before you travel.

Terms and Disclaimers

By booking treatment with us, you agree to the following terms. Your written treatment plan and consent form set out the full conditions for your booking.

  • Pre-trip assessment: our assessment is based on the X-rays and information you send, and is not a diagnosis. Your diagnosis and treatment plan are confirmed only after examination at our clinic, and may differ from the assessment.
  • Treatment decisions: the treatment method is decided by the treating dentist on clinical grounds. We may decline, change or stop a treatment if it cannot be carried out safely or predictably.
  • Your health information: please tell us accurately about your medical conditions, medicines and allergies. We cannot be responsible for problems caused by information that was not given to us.
  • Travel costs: flights, accommodation and other travel costs are your responsibility. We do not reimburse them if treatment is changed, stopped or cannot be completed. We recommend travel insurance.
  • After you return home: treatment by other dentists after your visit, and its cost, is outside our responsibility. Our crown redo policy applies only to treatment carried out at our clinic in Japan.
  • Results: dental treatment cannot guarantee a particular result or how long it will last. Results depend on your oral health, bite and home care.
  • Our liability: nothing in these terms limits our liability where Japanese law does not allow it to be limited.
  • Governing law and language: treatment and these terms are governed by the laws of Japan. Your treatment plan and consent form are provided in Japanese and English; if they differ, the Japanese version prevails.
  • Your data: X-rays and medical information you send us are used only to plan and provide your treatment, and are stored securely.
  • Email: email is not monitored for emergencies. For urgent problems, contact a local dental or medical service.
  • Changes: fees and conditions on this page may change. The fees and conditions in your written treatment plan apply to your booking.
